A 1RM snatch attempt and a snatch cycling piece in a CrossFit metcon are both snatches, both use hook grip, and both benefit from thumb tape. But they load the thumb in fundamentally different ways, and if you are applying tape the same way for both, you are probably not optimising for either.

What a Heavy Single Is Asking of Your Thumb
At maximal or near-maximal loads, the forces through the hook grip during the second pull are significant. The bar is accelerating aggressively upward, your thumb is being pinched between the bar and your fingers under load that is a meaningful percentage of your body weight. The force event is brief - the actual lift takes 1-2 seconds - but the peak force is high, and it repeats across your working sets and attempts.
The primary job of the tape in heavy single work is to provide a consistent grip surface and protect the thumb skin against the peak compression of the hook under heavy load. You are not dealing with accumulated friction over many reps - you are dealing with a small number of high-force events. The skin damage from heavy singles typically shows up as a concentrated bruised or compressed spot rather than broad friction damage.
For heavy single work, the wrap priority is: secure application that will not move, coverage of the specific pressure points on the thumb (the pad and inner surface that contacts the bar in hook position), and enough structural integrity in the wrap to maintain its shape under peak load. A single clean wrap with good coverage is generally sufficient.
What Snatch Cycling Is Asking of Your Thumb
A snatch cycling piece - 30 snatches for time, touch-and-go sets in a metcon, a high-rep conditioning piece at 60-70% of max - creates a very different type of thumb stress. The load per rep is lower, but the accumulated friction over 20, 30, or 50 reps is substantially higher than in heavy single work. Your thumb is cycling through the hook grip position repeatedly, absorbing friction from the bar at a lower peak force but across many more contact events.
The primary job of tape in cycling work is to protect against accumulated friction damage - the gradual wearing of the skin surface over a long set that does not cause any single painful event but leaves the thumb raw and tender by the end of the session. This kind of damage is what makes the next day's training uncomfortable, not what stops you mid-set.
For cycling work, the wrap priority shifts slightly toward coverage area - making sure the tape covers enough of the thumb surface that friction damage is absorbed across the tape surface rather than concentrated on specific skin patches - and tape integrity across many release-and-re-grip cycles. Touch-and-go snatches require the grip to briefly release at the bottom of each rep before the bar is regripped for the next rep, which creates a different kind of tape stress than the continuous grip of a heavy single attempt.
The Wrap Difference in Practice
For heavy singles: a clean single or double wrap is sufficient. Apply with moderate tension, making sure the critical pressure points on the thumb are covered. The tape needs to hold through a small number of high-force events and should be applied when the thumb is in a relatively relaxed position so it does not restrict range of motion when the hook grip is applied.
For cycling: consider slightly more coverage - making sure the entire pad surface of the thumb is protected, not just the primary pressure points. Also consider that the tape will experience more mechanical stress from repeated gripping and releasing, so the edge seal (pressing firmly along all tape edges after application) matters more for cycling than for heavy single work where the tape is under continuous grip rather than repeated application.
Neither approach needs complicated taping technique. The difference is in coverage priority and attention to edge sealing. The same tape - the same product from the same roll - works for both; the application is what adjusts.
Competition Snatches: A Specific Case
Competition snatches combine elements of both profiles. A weightlifting competition involves multiple heavy single attempts over a relatively short period, with the additional mental load of performing under pressure. A CrossFit competition might involve a snatch cycling piece in a workout followed by heavy single attempts in a different event on the same or subsequent day.
For pure weightlifting competition, the heavy single approach to taping is appropriate. Most competitive Olympic lifters with established hook grip calluses use less tape than CrossFitters doing conditioning work - they have accumulated the skin toughness that handles the peak forces of heavy singles, and their priority is a clean, minimal wrap that does not interfere with how the grip feels at near-maximal loads.
For CrossFit competition involving both cycling and heavy work, tape up for the most demanding combination. If you know you have a cycling snatch piece in the morning and a heavy snatch test in the afternoon, tape for cycling (more coverage, careful edge sealing) in the morning and re-tape cleanly before the heavy afternoon event if the morning tape has worn or peeled.
When to Tape and When Not To
The case for taping every hook grip session was made in the piece on tape and grip performance - the argument is that tape is performance equipment, not just a response to existing damage. But the specific case for taping snatch cycling is stronger than the case for taping light technique work.
For a technique session at 50% with 3-5 reps at a time and full rest between sets, the friction accumulation is low enough that experienced lifters with good calluses can often train without tape without meaningful damage risk. For a 30-rep cycling piece at 70%, the friction accumulation is high enough that tape significantly reduces the damage to your thumbs regardless of callus development. The distinction is rep volume at working intensity, not just load.
The practical rule: if your session involves more than 20 total hook grip reps at working intensity, tape. If it is primarily low-rep technique work with long rests, your calluses are probably sufficient on their own.
What Bad Tape Does to Snatch Cycling

A tape that bunches under repeated grip cycling will create a ridge under your fingers that changes how the hook feels over the course of the set - what started as a familiar grip feel becomes increasingly awkward as the tape folds.
