Daniel is a Hero WOD named in honour of Army Staff Sergeant Daniel Crabtree, killed in Iraq in 2006. Like most Hero WODs it is long enough and loaded enough that equipment decisions matter - this is not a short benchmark where the clock is more important than your gear setup.
The workout: 50 pull-ups, 400m run, 21 thrusters (95lb), 800m run, 21 thrusters (95lb), 400m run, 50 pull-ups. Scored for time, with most athletes taking 30-50 minutes depending on thruster and pull-up proficiency and how well they manage the running.
The sleeve strategy for Daniel is similar in principle to Hollywood but with a different movement structure. The runs and pull-ups do not need sleeves. The thrusters absolutely do. The question is how to manage the transitions given that the workout bookends the loaded thruster sections with running rather than giving you a built-in rest period to transition.
Why Thrusters Specifically Earn Sleeve Support
A thruster is a front squat into a push press - the most demanding compound movement in CrossFit programming in terms of systemic load, and one of the highest knee-loading movements in the catalogue. The squat phase requires full knee flexion under load at speed. The drive phase from the bottom of the squat into the overhead generates significant force through the knee during the extension. And at 21 reps per set, done twice, you are putting your knees through 42 loaded thruster cycles in this workout.
The combination of deep knee flexion, loaded extension, and high rep volume is the exact use case 7mm knee sleeves were designed for. The compression keeps the joint warm and tracking properly throughout the set. The proprioceptive feedback helps maintain knee alignment as leg drive deteriorates across the later reps - the point in a thruster set where form breaks down first is usually the knee drive at the bottom, and the sleeve's compression cues help you notice and correct that before it becomes a movement problem.

Pull-Ups and the Run: No Sleeve Needed
The 50 pull-ups that open and close Daniel are upper body movements. There is no loaded knee involvement in a strict or kipping pull-up that justifies 7mm neoprene around the joint during those sets. Wearing sleeves through the pull-up sets means wearing them through the 400m and 800m runs too, which creates the same thermal load and restriction problem that applies to all running in sleeves during Hero WODs.
The structure of Daniel means the runs fall between the pull-up sections and the thruster sections, which makes the transition logistics slightly different from a workout like Hidalgo where formal rest periods are built in. In Daniel, the transition happens at the movement changeover during a timed effort - you are coming off a run and going directly into thrusters, or coming off thrusters and going directly into a run.
How to Execute the Transitions in Daniel
The ideal sequence: start the workout without sleeves. Complete the 50 pull-ups without them. Run the 400m without them. As you arrive back in the gym after the 400m run and approach the barbell, put the sleeves on in the first 10-15 seconds before you start the thruster set. Complete 21 thrusters with sleeves on. Run the 800m without sleeves - take them off as you leave the barbell station. Return from the 800m run, put sleeves back on before the second set of 21 thrusters. Complete the thrusters. Take them off. Run the 400m and complete the final 50 pull-ups without them.
This gives you four transitions total - on before first thruster set, off before 800m run, on before second thruster set, off before final 400m run. Each transition takes under 15 seconds with a velcro design. Total additional time: under 60 seconds across the entire workout, for joints that are properly supported through 42 loaded thruster cycles.
If the transitions feel like they are costing you rhythm, simplify to two transitions: keep sleeves off for the entire opening section (50 pull-ups, 400m, 21 thrusters, 800m), then put them on before the second thruster set and keep them on for the remainder. This is slightly less optimal than the four-transition approach but still provides full sleeve support for the second and typically harder thruster set, which is when fatigue has accumulated from everything that came before.
The 800m Run as a Natural Transition Point
The 800m run sits between the two thruster sets and functions as the natural transition window for the sleeve strategy. Coming off the first thruster set, taking the sleeves off before the run gives you the full 800m (typically 4-8 minutes for most athletes at WOD pace) without neoprene on warm, post-thruster knees. The run itself keeps the legs warm, so you are not coming back from the 800m with cold joints that need to be warmed up - you can go straight from the 800m into the sleeve application and the second thruster set without a re-warm-up concern.
The mental benefit of the 800m as a transition opportunity is also real. Knowing you are going to put the sleeves on for the second thruster set as you come back from the run gives you a defined moment of preparation during the run itself. You are not making decisions mid-movement; the plan is set before the run starts.
What Daniel Feels Like With and Without This Strategy
Without the strategy - either no sleeves at all, or sleeves worn throughout - the experience is predictably different from the targeted approach. No sleeves means the thruster sets, particularly the second set after the 800m run when cumulative fatigue is highest, are done with an unsupported joint through 21 loaded squat cycles. The knee tracking deteriorates more visibly in the later reps. The catch at the bottom of the thruster feels less stable.
Sleeves throughout means running with neoprene for 1.6km total across three run segments. The final 400m run and 50 pull-ups feel heavier on legs that have been wearing neoprene through the full workout duration. The thermal load builds throughout the session in a way that affects comfort and pace in the running sections.
The targeted approach - sleeves on for thrusters only - means the running feels like running (not neoprene-wrapped running), and the thruster sets feel supported in the specific way that matters for loaded deep squat work. The trade-off is the transition management, which the velcro design makes negligible.
Sizing and Position for Thrusters Specifically
Thrusters require the sleeve to accommodate both deep squat flexion and a full standing extension position, cycling through that full range of motion at pace. A sleeve that is positioned too low on the leg will move up as you drive out of the squat; one that is too high will move down into the squat. Position the sleeve so the centre of the compression is over the kneecap, which means the sleeve sits slightly higher on the leg than you might initially expect.
If the sleeve moves during thrusters, it is almost certainly a sizing issue rather than a position issue. A sleeve that fits correctly stays put through the full range of motion of a thruster without drifting.
