Winter training in an Australian CrossFit box means a few things: colder air in the gym, a longer warm-up before your hands feel ready, and a barbell that has been sitting in an unheated space overnight and starts the session significantly colder than your hands. That last one - the cold barbell specifically - has a real effect on hook grip mechanics that most athletes have noticed but not examined closely.
What Cold Metal Does to Hook Grip
A warm barbell has a slight natural friction that helps the hook grip hold. The knurling on a barbell is designed to create grip through mechanical engagement - the raised diamonds of the knurling dig slightly into the skin of your hand and provide grip through surface contact rather than just friction. But temperature affects how the knurling interacts with your skin.
Cold metal is denser and harder at the surface than the same metal at room temperature (the difference is small but real). It is also more thermally conductive - it draws heat out of your skin more aggressively, which causes the skin to contract slightly and become stiffer. The combination means a cold barbell feels harder and less grippy in the first few working sets, even with chalk. Athletes who have trained year-round in a non-heated gym know the feeling: the first set of the morning, the bar feels slick and slightly foreign, and the grip does not feel locked the way it does when everything is warm.
For hook grip specifically, this matters because the mechanics of the hook depend on the thumb wrapping around a bar that it can get enough grip on to be held in place by the fingers. When the bar is cold and the skin on your thumb is slightly stiff from the temperature, the initial grip application feels less secure. You apply more force to overcome the sensation of reduced security, which means more pressure on the thumb skin against a harder, colder surface. More pressure plus colder, stiffer skin equals more friction damage per rep.
Why Cold Weather Increases Thumb Damage Risk
There are three mechanisms that make winter training harder on your thumbs:
First, cold skin is more brittle and less elastic than warm skin. The flexibility of your thumb skin - its ability to stretch slightly under pressure and return rather than tearing - decreases with temperature. The first sets of a winter session before your hands are warm produce more micro-damage per rep than the same sets when your skin is properly warmed up, because the skin cannot absorb the friction as elastically.
Second, the gripping response to a cold, slightly-less-secure bar is to apply more force. This is partly conscious (you know the bar feels less secure so you grip harder) and partly unconscious (your nervous system increases grip force in response to the proprioceptive signal that the grip is not as locked as usual). More gripping force means more pressure on the thumb skin against the knurling. More pressure equals more friction damage, especially on already-cold, less-elastic skin.
Third, winter training typically means training with less hand sweat in the early sets, because cold air draws moisture away from the skin surface. Chalk works best on slightly moist skin - truly dry, cold skin with chalk on it actually reduces friction to a point where the grip feels disconnected rather than secure. This counterintuitive effect is well-known to lifters who train through cold winters: the first few winter sets sometimes feel worse with chalk than without, until the hands warm up enough for the chalk to work correctly.
What Tape Does About All of This
Thumb tape addresses two of these three problems directly. The tape creates a consistent surface on your thumb regardless of skin temperature - the tape material does not become brittle or lose elasticity in cold weather the way skin does. The friction properties of the tape against the bar are also more consistent than skin friction, which means the grip feel is more predictable in the first cold sets of a winter session than it is with bare skin.
The tape also provides a layer between the knurling and the thumb skin itself, which means the cold-skin brittleness problem is partially bypassed - the tape absorbs some of the friction and pressure that would otherwise be acting directly on cold, stiff skin. You still need to warm your hands up through the session, but the tape provides a buffer during the early sets when your skin is most vulnerable.
The third problem - chalk efficacy on cold, dry skin - is not directly solved by tape, but it is partially mitigated. Chalk over tape behaves more consistently than chalk over cold dry skin because the tape surface provides a more consistent substrate for the chalk to sit on.
Warming Up the Hands Before Heavy Sets
The single best thing you can do for hook grip in winter training is take your hand warm-up seriously. This means: light cardio that gets blood moving to the extremities before any barbell work, specific hand and wrist mobility to warm the joints, and deliberately warming your hands before the barbell goes into them. Some lifters run hot water over their hands briefly before training; others use gloves during the warm-up and remove them once they are warm; others simply allow more warm-up time before moving to working sets.
The tape should still go on before the session, on clean dry skin, in the correct sequence (tape first, then chalk). But do not substitute tape-before-warm-up for actually warming up - the tape helps but it does not fully compensate for cold, stiff skin mechanics. The combination of warm hands and properly applied tape is what gets you through the first winter sets without thumb damage.
The Re-Tape Problem in Cold Weather
One winter-specific issue with tape is that cold affects adhesive performance. Most tape adhesives are designed to bond optimally at body temperature and will bond less strongly to cold skin than to warm skin. If you are applying tape in a very cold gym at the start of a session before your skin is warm, the initial adhesive bond may be weaker than it would be in warmer conditions.
The fix is to apply tape after your hands are warm rather than before you start training. Tape on warm skin bonds properly; tape on cold skin may peel faster than expected. This means your sequence becomes: warm up until hands are at training temperature, then tape, then chalk, then train. The trade-off is that you are starting your warm-up sets without tape, which is usually fine at light weights where hook grip damage risk is low anyway.
Alternatively: apply tape, then use gloves or warm your hands actively until the tape has fully bonded to the skin (1-2 minutes of warmth is enough to set the adhesive properly), then remove gloves and chalk as usual.
Cold Gym vs Warm Gym: What Changes in Your Tape Usage
In a warm gym during Australian summer, hook grip athletes often find they can train bare-thumbed for moderate sessions and only need tape for heavy or high-volume work. The skin is warm and elastic, the bar is at room temperature, and the conditions are reasonably forgiving.
In a cold winter gym, the argument for taping every session rather than only heavy sessions gets stronger. The risk to the skin is higher in every cold-conditions session, not just the heavy ones. A moderate-volume session in a cold gym can cause more thumb damage than a heavy session in a warm gym because the cold-skin brittleness problem is session-level, not load-level.
