Knee Sleeves for Hollywood: On for the Wall Balls, Off for Everything Else

Hollywood is a Hero WOD with a specific structure that makes the knee sleeve question genuinely interesting. The workout involves a large volume of wall balls interspersed with other movements, and the wall ball thruster - catching a 20lb ball at the bottom of a squat and driving it to a 10-foot target repeatedly - is one of the highest-volume knee-loading movements in CrossFit programming. If there is ever a movement in a long WOD that justifies sleeves being on, it is wall balls at volume.

The full Hollywood workout: 50 wall balls, 35 pull-ups, 25 box jumps, 15 hang power cleans, 25 box jumps, 35 pull-ups, 50 wall balls. It is scored for time and takes most athletes 25-45 minutes depending on their fitness and how well they pace the wall ball sets.

The sleeve strategy: keep them off through the pull-ups and box jumps that bookend the workout, on for the wall ball sections. The structure of the workout makes the transitions more complex than a simple on-off at a single rest point, so I will go through the movement-by-movement logic below.

Why Wall Balls Load the Knee More Than You Might Expect

Wall balls look like a conditioning movement and they are, but the bottom of each rep requires a squat - catching the ball with full hip and knee flexion, absorbing the load of the ball landing in your hands, and immediately reversing direction into the drive phase. At 50 reps in the first set and another 50 in the final set, you are putting your knees through 100 loaded squat cycles during this workout.

The load per rep is lower than a barbell squat, but the volume and the specific mechanics of catching the ball at the bottom - where your knees are absorbing both your bodyweight and the ball's momentum simultaneously - make this meaningfully different from running or rowing. The knee is under cyclical compressive load through the same range of motion as a squat, repeatedly, for sets that take most athletes 4-10 minutes at full pace.

This is exactly the movement pattern that 7mm knee compression helps with. The compression keeps the joint warm and tracking properly across the full set, the proprioceptive feedback helps maintain knee tracking as fatigue accumulates across the 50 reps, and the support through the catch phase of the squat reduces the joint stress at the bottom of each rep.

Pull-Ups: No Sleeve Required

The workout opens and closes its middle section with 35 pull-ups. Pull-ups are almost entirely upper body - lat, bicep, core. The knee is not involved in the pull-up movement pattern in any meaningful way. Wearing a 7mm neoprene sleeve through a 35-rep pull-up set does nothing for performance and adds unnecessary thermal load to a knee that does not need support for this movement.

The practical question is whether the transitions around the pull-up sections are manageable. The workout structure is: wall balls, pull-ups, box jumps, hang power cleans, box jumps, pull-ups, wall balls. The ideal transitions would be: sleeves on before wall balls (first set), sleeves off after first wall balls and before pull-ups, decision point at box jumps (discussed below), sleeves back on before second wall ball set.

In practice, most athletes will find two transitions - off before the first pull-up set, on before the second wall ball set - to be the right balance. Taking them off and on again around the box jumps adds two more transitions to a workout that is already complex enough.

Box Jumps: The Judgment Call

Box jumps sit between the pull-ups and the hang power cleans in the middle of the workout. As I covered in the Hidalgo post, box jump landings create brief high-force events through the knee, but the movement is not loading the knee through deep flexion the way a squat does. The case for sleeves during box jumps is the landing absorption; the case against is that you are transitioning from pull-ups (no sleeve needed) into box jumps and then into hang power cleans (no sleeve needed either), before doing more box jumps and then pull-ups before the final wall ball set.

My honest answer: if you are doing Hollywood with the on-off strategy, the middle section (pull-ups, box jumps, hang power cleans, box jumps, pull-ups) is a good candidate for leaving the sleeves off. The movements do not primarily load the knee through deep squat flexion, the sleeve transitions around this section add complexity without proportionate benefit, and your knees are well-warmed from the first 50 wall balls and will stay warm through the middle section without the sleeve.

If you have a specific history of knee discomfort during box jump landings, keep them on through the middle section. Otherwise, off before the pull-ups and back on before the final 50 wall balls is the practical call.

Hang Power Cleans at the Centre

The 15 hang power cleans sit at the centre of the workout. A hang power clean is caught in a partial squat - typically to parallel or just above - rather than in the full squat catch of a regular power clean or squat clean. The knee flexion is significant but not as deep as a squat clean, and at 15 reps it is lower volume than the wall ball sets.

In isolation, hang power cleans at 15 reps are borderline for sleeve use. Combined with their position in the workout - surrounded by movements that do not need sleeves - they do not change the calculation enough to warrant an additional transition. If you are keeping sleeves off through the middle section, keep them off for the hang power cleans too. If you decide to keep them on through the middle section, the hang power cleans are well-suited to having them.

The Transition Timing in Practice

For the simplified two-transition approach (off after first wall ball set, back on before second), here is how it plays out in timing:

Start the workout with sleeves on. Complete the first 50 wall balls. As you transition to the pull-up bar, take the sleeves off - this happens naturally as you move to the next station, not as a separate deliberate stop. Complete the pull-ups, box jumps, hang power cleans, and the second set of box jumps without sleeves. As you approach the pull-up bar for the second set of pull-ups, have your sleeves accessible. Put them on during the brief transition between the second set of pull-ups and the final 50 wall balls. Complete the final 50 wall balls with sleeves on.

Total transition time: two transitions at roughly 8-10 seconds each. Total time with sleeves on during the workout: roughly the first 50 wall balls (5-10 minutes) plus the final 50 wall balls (6-12 minutes, accounting for fatigue). The middle section - which takes most athletes 12-20 minutes - is done without them.

Why This Matters for Such a High-Rep Set

Wall ball fatigue in Hollywood is primarily muscular - legs, shoulders, lungs. What the sleeve addresses is the joint support dimension of that fatigue. In a 50-rep wall ball set, your knee tracking tends to start drifting inward as your legs tire - the knee cave that coaches are always cueing against happens progressively worse through a long set as the hip abductors fatigue. The sleeve's compression does not cure hip abductor fatigue, but it does provide external cue and support that keeps the knee tracking more consistently through the back half of a long set.

The second 50-rep set at the end of the workout is when this matters most. You have already done 50 wall balls, 35 pull-ups, 25 box jumps, 15 hang power cleans, and another 25 box jumps and 35 pull-ups before you get to the final wall balls. The final set is done on tired legs, and the sleeve's proprioceptive contribution to knee tracking is higher at that fatigue level than it would be fresh.

Putting the sleeves on before the final wall ball set is not about fresh-knee performance - it is about maintaining form quality through the last 30-50 reps of a very long set at the end of an already long workout. That is where they earn their place in Hollywood.

The Design Consideration for In-WOD Transitions

Hollywood's structure - multiple movements with natural transitions between them rather than built-in rest periods like Hidalgo - means the sleeve transitions happen at movement changeovers rather than during a formal rest. This requires a design that comes on and off without stopping the clock, essentially. A traditional slip-on sleeve that requires shoe removal makes these transitions either impossible within a competitive effort or requiring a deliberate stop that costs you 2-3 minutes.

Common Questions for Hollywood

Should I start the workout with sleeves on or put them on at the beginning? Start with them on. The first movement is 50 wall balls and there is no non-knee section before it, so they should be on from rep one.

What if I am just trying to survive Hollywood and am not competing? The on-off strategy is still useful but the transitions are less important if your pace between movements is already slow. If you are resting significantly between each movement, you have time to put sleeves on and take them off more carefully. The strategy matters most when the pace is high enough that deliberate stops cost you meaningful time.

What weight wall ball are we talking about? RX in Hollywood is a 20lb ball for men, 14lb for women. At 20lb, the squat catch at the bottom of each rep is loading the knee with both bodyweight and ball momentum. At higher body weights or with poor catch mechanics, this load is significant enough across 100 reps to make sleeve support genuinely worthwhile.
